During the Easter holidays the Silver D of E group embarked on their first full three day expedition.

The 11 strong team split into two groups to take on a challenging 52km route between Barrowford and Chipping, climbing Pendle Hill and Waddington Fell.  The groups made two overnight camps on farms in Waddington and Newton, with only the basic facilities of a toilet and a tap!

The Silver level expedition is a big step up from the Bronze level two day journeys, and involves navigating more challenging terrain over longer distances.  The group had to carry their own clothing, tents, food and camping, safety and cooking equipment.  All participants successfully managed to cook warm meals al fresco each evening, even when faced with cold winds and rain.

Both groups finally reached their destination after three days, and were greeted by the welcoming sight of the Oakhill minibus, shortly followed by a bath and a warm bed!

Well done to all involved – the team spirit and determination was excellent.  They can now confidently face their final assessed expedition, which will take place in June in the Yorkshire Dales.

Year 9 Geography field trip to the Yorkshire Dales.

On the 14th March, the pupils of year nine took a day trip to the town of Malham.  From the car park, they proceeded along the footpath until they came to Janet’s Foss, a waterfall, a few of the pupils then decided to go for a swim and others went to explore a nearby cave.  Sadly, the swimmers then had to trek the rest of the way soaked to the skin but luckily it was a nice day.

The class then continued on, following Gordale Beck, a small stream that led on to the impressive Gordale Scar, a collapsed cavern fringed with dizzyingly high cliffs.  With a little trepidation, the class then set about scaling the next waterfall to continue their journey.  Maintaining a good pace the class hiked across the moor to Malham Tarn, a small lake that lies on top of a layer of slate, and then followed another small stream to Water Sinks.  Soldiering on, they passed through a dry river valley that was formed at the end of the last ice age, and then stopped for lunch by another cave.

Continuing down the valley, they finally reached Malham Cove, a once great waterfall that tumbled over the edge of the 310ft sheer cliff, after receiving this information they were then told they could look over the edge!  After this they followed a limestone pavement back down the side of the cliff and worked their way back to Malham where the class enjoyed some well earned ice cream and yet again some of the more adventurous pupils went for a swim in the local river…

It was a brilliant day that was enjoyed by all, and special thanks should also go to Mr. Jepson and Mr. Peel for organizing the event.
